Buckets, Lab Or Both? |
1. |
House GEMS buckets in a library or anywhere else in a school or keep them in the Principal’s office (as some have done!). A school may further opt for a world class mathematics laboratory by supplementing the buckets with other things. If you must choose between a lab and buckets, its better to choose buckets which offer flexibility and use for the whole class. |
2. |
With many sections, scheduling maths lab time is difficult. |
3. |
Also, unless the lab is large, it is not effective to take the whole class over as one group. |
4. |
Unlike buckets, there are rarely 40 plus of any one item in a maths lab. Every child cannot therefore get hands-on experience. |
5. |
Labs often become like museums and do not serve a high purpose factor after some time. |
6. |
On the other hand, a math lab offers certain advantages, for example, when an expensive item cannot be bought in multiple sets or a large piece cannot be taken from class to class. |
